Sports un fiziskās aktivitātes ievērojami sekmē iedzīvotāju labklājību, tomēr to līmenis pašlaik nav īpaši augsts un dažās valstīs pat pazeminās. Eiropas sporta nedēļas mērķis ir mainīt šo situāciju. Nepietiekama fiziskā aktivitāte ne tikai negatīvi ietekmē sabiedrību un cilvēka veselību, bet rada arī ekonomiska rakstura izmaksas. Cilvēks, kas sporto, ilgāk nekā citi saglabā labu fizisko formu un veselību. Tas, kuram ir aktīvāks dzīvesveids, mazāk slimo. Sporta iekšējās vērtības, tādas kā komandas gars, godīgums, disciplinētība, pretinieka un spēles likumu cienīšana, ir atzītas visā pasaulē un var tikt izmantotas solidaritātes, sociālās saliedētības stiprināšanai, kā arī veicināt savstarpējas saprašanās atmosfēras radīšanu.
