Latvijas Reģionu apvienība ir izstrādājusi grozījumu Republikas pilsētas domes un novada domes vēlēšanu likumā, rosinot atļaut pilsētas un novada domes vēlēšanās piedalīties iedzīvotājiem jau no 16 gadu vecuma. Šodien mēs nereti gan medijos, gan sabiedrībā dzirdam jauniešu virzienā adresētus pārmetumus, ka jaunieši par maz interesējas par sabiedriskajām aktualitātēm un politiskajiem procesiem. Varbūt mēs vienkārši esam aizmirsuši, ka paši neesam devuši iespēju aktīvi piedalīties un paust savu politisko nostāju vēlēšanās. Vēlos atzīmēt, ka tajā pašā laikā kriminālatbildība ir paredzēta jau no 14 gadu vecuma, savukārt no 15 gadiem personu var nodarbināt pastāvīgā darbā. 15 gados jauniešiem obligāti ir jau arī jābūt personu apliecinošam dokumentam, bet no 16 gadiem viņi jau ir tiesīgi noslēgt darījumus par savu brīvo mantu. Latvijas Reģionu apvienība uzskata, ka jāpaplašina vēlētāju, kā arī jāpalielina politiķu interese par jauniešiem svarīgiem un aktuāliem jautājumiem, par to risināšanu. Tas nav mazsvarīgi, ņemot vērā līdzšinējās demogrāfiskās un emigrācijas tendences mūsu valstī. Turklāt ir jāapzinās, ka vēlēšanas notiek reizi četros gados un ka ar šādu iniciatīvu - ļaut jaunietim piedalīties vēlēšanās no 16 gadiem - mēs dotu iespēju viņam paust viedokli, pirms viņš pamet savu novadu, dodoties studēt uz lielajām pilsētām vai pat darbā uz ārvalstīm. Turklāt aicinājumu atbalstīt vecuma sliekšņa samazināšanu Eiropas valstīs jau ir izteikusi Eiropas Padome, 2011.gada 23.jūlijā Eiropas Padomes Parlamentārajā Asamblejā pieņemot rezolūciju Nr.1826 un aicinot piešķirt vēlēšanu tiesības jau no 16 gadu vecuma visās 47 Eiropas Padomes valstīs visu veidu vēlēšanās. No Baltijas valstīm pirmā Eiropas Padomes aicinājumam ir sekojusi Igaunija, kas jau šā gada maijā pieņēma lēmumu par balsošanas vecuma samazināšanu pašvaldību vēlēšanās no 18 uz 16 gadiem.
