Tik un tā spēlmaņi godīgos kaut kad jau apspēlēs, ja godīgie ielaidīsies šajā spēlē. Mēs varbūt aizrunājamies tik tālu, ka labākais nemaz nav labākais kandidāts. Un mēs taču negribam aizrunāties tik tālu, ka Latvija nav pelnījusi cienījamu prezidentu, ka viņš ir pārāk labs un godīgs, un gudrs, lai būtu prezidents, lai ielaistos mūsu politikā. Mēs taču nenolaidīsimies savā izvēlē tik zemu... mēs taču nebaidāmies no personības, uz kuras fona varētu sajusties pārāk sekli visi pārējie politiķi. Partijas taču nebaidās no prezidenta, kurš tām varētu neizdabāt. Un mēs nebaidāmies no personības, kura mūsu politikai varētu likt pacelties pāri intrigām, ko mums bieži vien pārmet un bieži vien ne bez pamata, jo kādu prezidentu izvēlamies, tāds tiešām ir arī mūsu pašu politiskais portrets, kas rāda mūsu politisko domāšanu, mūsu politisko kultūru. Tālab es novēlētu pārvarēt šajā gadījumā arī aizvainojumus, personiskos aizvainojumus, kas mums ir bijuši šajā politiskajā cīņā, partiju aizvainojumus, un pacelties tiem pāri.
